CULTURE & ADVERTISEMENTS

AN INTROSPECTIVE LOOK

In our society, is culture defined by what we do or by what we see? Is the evolution of our cultural trends a manifestation of society’s actions or trends influenced by impactful advertisements we repeatedly view? Does society set the tone for cultural trends or does media communications spread across the right channels funnel a movement? Irregardless of whether the channel is in the print or digital arena as society and advertisement communications have always been linked. The digital sector has just increased the speed of delivery as well as the vast reach that can be obtained through these means. The question becomes as to whether we each walk through life on a predetermined track based on the messages we come in contact with on a daily, hourly, minute-by-minute basis? Do we shift our patterns/behaviors ever so slightly based upon the mass communications which incite the growth of each trend? Culture and advertisements have become intertwined foundational elements of one another exemplifying the tone for how society unfolds.

Across the decades, advertisements can be seen normalizing cultural behaviors and highlighting some trends over others. Our previous blog post back in May 2018, showcased the 1920’s-1950s vintage media scope. These ad depictions were light and airy with overtones of ‘Big Brother’ guidance on how to behave or conform to the masses. Illustrations and non-realistic visual elements were seen more often than realistic depictions of community. Whereas we see a strong visual and cultural shift during the 1970’s advertisements which migrated toward a more self-reflective stance. The visuals were more evocative and up-close with a very direct approach. Creating a silent interaction between the advertisement and the viewer. The colors more grounded and saturated with bolder font uses. This was a generation coming into their own and wanting more.

THE EVOLUTION OF US

So, perhaps it is a unique blend of stories told through creative visuals that shift the fabric of society. It is in the interaction and integration of those products into our personal lives that solidifies the memories which generates the deeper impact of who we are as we evolve as individuals as well as a society. It is a landscape that is always developing based upon a shifting foundation of those coming into their own. An impressionable tapestry of consumer messaging that is either the mime or the creator. Enjoy a look back at a 100 years of groundbreaking ads that exemplify many generations of consumers. Without the vibrancy of marketing—where would we all be?

May you see yourself in some of these eras and embrace that we are a steady evolution of culture spread across the powerful advertisements that come into our view. They exaggerate who we are and what we may or may not be. The power of media communications is vast and those that have something to offer should be channeling several outlets by which to share their voice and story. Let your story evolve as the years unwind in memories of advertising messages holding their place across time and space.
